Dr. Robert Manley
Not only was Dr. Manley an icon and most respected member of the faculty at The Hiram Scott College, but Dr Manley went on to become one of the premier historians, songwriters and extrodinary raconteur of the entire state. In the picture above you see Dr. Manley in character as a prairie preacher about ready to talk to his audience about the trials and tribulations of the early pioneers of Nebraska.
You are invited to attend a celebration of Dr. Manley's life in song and story. For a couple of hours in Kearney Nebraska, we will be reminiscing about the impact Bob Manley had on the people of Nebraska. Please come and share your stories, thoughts, memories and good times with his many friends.
A celebration of his life will be held in at the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island, Nebraska on September 19, 2010 from 2:00 - 4:00pm or however long it takes. Refreshments will be provided.
Please contact Bob Manley Jr. at rnmjr1951@yahoo.com to confirm your attendance. If you are anywhere in the area, please make a special trip to celebrate with us!

Butch Churchill of Graniteville VT is working on the registered list of alumni and is trying to figure out the current addresses and the not so current addresses on this website. He's also been talking about an all school reunion. So, if he calls, he's legitimate, and not some solicitor trying to take your money. Mark
Announcement
January 2010
Several HSC alumnus have been discussing a permanent memorial to HSC to be place where the original flag pole was situated when the college was in existence. This is just in the idea stage and Butch Churchill is leading the charge. To make this happen, Butch needs to hear your ideas and get your input. He needs volunteers to be on a committee, and from that he needs to get a time frame and decide exactly what we would like to do. Since we're not getting any younger, maybe one last party in Scottsbluff to unveil this. Butch needs your help. email him at Butch@bckrealestate.com.
So........ here's the News!
10/27/09 -Todd Pallack - Here's news, Apparently my son had his fill of hearing for 30 years, how great HSC was and how much I missed Scottsbluff. My new "Vanity" plate registration reads 21 V722 just like back in the day. Scotts Bluff County license plates all start with "21" because Scotts Bluff County was the 21st largest county in Nebraska. He presented it to me for my birthday last Tuesday, the 27th. Regards to all, Todd Pallack
8/15/09 - Tau Delta Phi Fraternity - To: Alumni of Hiram Scott College, My name is Pete Sasso. I am the National Vice President for Tau Delta Phi Fraternity. I was wondering if you knew of an alumnus from Tau Delta Phi at Hiram Scott College that could get into contact with? I am interested in the history of our former Delta Alpha chapter there. We are approaching our cetennial celebration and getting some additional information from an alumnus would definitely help. I look forward to hearing back from you and thank you for your assistance. 5/30/09 - Bruce Beitz: Thought that we could have a golf outing in some major city.
What about Phoenix, St. Petes/Clearwater, Las Vegas or any other area . Possibly Aug. or Sept. a large city would allow enough rooms and places to meet up! --- just an idea. Everything would be up to each individual, but we could list some central meeting places during the day and evening. Bruc. Email Bruce at: bruce@brucebeitz.com
1-8-09 RICH SHEAR: Hi All: I had a blast attending HSC from the fall and most of the winter of '66-'67 in the "TUB". I clearly remember watching Green Bay play the Chiefs in Super Bowl #1. By spring I was so sick of the incessant wind I thought I'd go nuts. Had a great time hanging out with Dave Hickey, Bruce Wood, Jim Andrews, Mike Wilbourne and many others. Transferred back to Alfred University for the fall of '67. Been running the family shoe business for the past 40 years here, where I grew up, in Western New York. Married to Gwyn for 38 years. We own a horsefarm just south of town. If you attended those years and have any reason to make some noise back at me you can reach me at: rich@hamiltonshoes.com.
1-2-09 BILL PETRELLIS: Hello HSC Family, Just wanted to say hello to everyone who keeps in touch through this website. I live in Media, Pa. and just retired in June after 37 years of teaching my favorite subject PE. As I look back, I would not have made it without HSC. I still am very close with Ron "Gabe" Gabriel, Ron "Verge" Vergillo, and Joe Carroll. Three of the greatest athletes. Just want to know if there is any other place to view pictures of old classmates. I was so excited to stumble upon this website and hope to be a part of the next reunion. I am happy to hear that some of the great ex football players still live in Scottsbluff, Neb. Feel free to e-mail me any time. wpetrellis@gmail.com Happy New Year!
12-08 - BOB BRINK - Yesterday, when I reviewed the site again, I wanted to update my personal information; however, I forgot to state something that may be of interest to some other Scotties, namely that: 1. HSC gave me the opportunity to continue my postsecondary education; 2. HCS offered me a quality education (first rate teaching staff); 3. I'm not sure where else, back then, I could have started & completed my BA studies in 2 1/2 years under the HSC tri-mester system; & 4. But for these first two facts of great significance to me personally, I would not have been an acceptable candidate to either of my two post grad.law school programs. I understand that HSC represented the same kind of opportunity to several others. We shall always be grateful for this opportunity. If you have space for this kind of endorsement of the HSC experience, I think that it is the kind of information of possible value to our class mates & others. Thanks for maintaining the web site. Bob Brink

Dr. Robert Manley 80, Lincoln, died peacefully in the presence of the Lord and his family on Wednesday (10/22/08). Bob was born on February 23, 1928 to Milford and Janet Manley in Neilsville, Wisc. He grew up in Villa Park, Ill. and attended Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill. In 1950 he moved to Belleville, Kan. to play semi-pro baseball. It was there he began his teaching career and married Phyllis Hall on November 8, 1950. In 1951, he began his 50+ year career in Nebraska. He taught history in McCook, Osceola and Seward high Schools; the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Hiram Scott College in Scottsbluff. He later worked for Selection Research, Inc.; the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island and the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. Bob's accomplishments were many during his life, but two which he was most proud of were his promoting of Jim Fras' song, "Beautiful Nebraska", which became the state song; and his work with rural communities of Nebraska using an economic development process he called "Community Builders". His life will long be remembered as one which was dedicated to his family as well as to the children, the educators and the communities of Nebraska. He worked tirelessly to promote, teach and live one of his core beliefs - In order for people to know they have a future, they must first know they have a past.
Dr. Manley is survived by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis; children, Bob Manley Jr., Tooele, Utah; Janet Keller, Lincoln; Carol Miller, Lincoln; John Manley, Kearney; Kelly Manley, Sacramento, Calif.; Susan Miller, Overland Park, Kan.; Joy McArtor, Lincoln; Becky Richardson, Lincoln; 22 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren.
A family graveside service will be held at the Hoyt Cemetery in Hoyt, Kan. No Viewing or Visitation. Memorials may be sent to City Impact, 400 North 27th St., Lincoln, NE 68503; or to a charity of one's own choosing. Arrangements by Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home. Condolences may be left @ www.bmlfh.com |
10/13/08 - BRUCE BEITZ - This week I am golfing with Steve Zemko in Austin,TX in his new home. I recently visited Carl Carbonar in West Virginia. and oh, a retired Skip Olds went back to Alliance to fill in as A.D. They are all doing well. Also I have been in contact with Pete Janis who has a step daughter fighting cancer. All of us along with Ken Michaels, Jim Lair, Ken Nickels, Pat McNeese, Skip Olds and others have kept in contact, and are wondering if another "Reunion" is planned --- hopefully before it is too late to attend!
10/3/08 - JOANNE HARRIS LACEY - RICK AND JULIE VALENTI - In August "07, JoAnne Harris Lacey- AKA Gumby and husband Tom went from Virginia to Summerland, BC, Canada to visit Rick and Julie Valenti. We flew into Calgary, rented a car and drove across the Canadian Rockies, It was incredible. Summerland is in a desert with a HUGE glacier ( read very cold ) fed lake smack in the middle. The Valentis also have a home in Apex, a ski resort several hours away. So the temperatures in August ranged from the sweltering high 90s in the desert to a very comfortable 70's in the mountains. It was amazing.
The house in Summerland has a spaceship on the roof that blinks blue lights, the aliens favorite color, and the Apex ski-out house has an enormous picture window overlooking the mountain.
We traveled with another couple. I hadn't seen Julie and Rick for 37 years, since we both lived on Long Island in the summer of '70 and I was married to Bob Wagner (HSC '71). Tom and the others had never met them, and we went in knowing it might be a recipe for disaster, but just the opposite. WE HAD A BLAST. Julie- now Julia, was an unbelievable hostess. They know everyone in town, Rick being the unofficial mayor, I swear he can talk the fleas off a dog. We ate at the best restaurants, went out on the lake in the very fine Valenti boat, the "Hula Girl", went to the best music venues, drank WAY too much, went hang gliding, and had a lot of good fun:)
So, this summer; June '09; the Valentis will travel to VA and then we are all going out west to Nebraska, Wyoming, the Dakotas, and Colorado for a couple of weeks. We will be in Scottsbluff sometime during the trip, my first time back since '70, I'm guessing we won't be staying there long since Buddie's is closed, and I have a bad check at Corks and Cans. Anyone else want to come?? I can be reached at joanne.lacey@fcps.edu. I teach reading and math to students with mental retardation, who would of thunk? HSC prepared me very well!
8/28/2008 - 9/1/2008 ALPHA TAU REUNION: On Labor Day Weekend 2008, the Alpha Tau Fraternity hosted it's first ever reunion in Scottsbluff for it's brothers and H.S.C. friends. Mother nature cooperated by giving us beautiful weather for the festivities. On Thursday and Friday the arrivals were greeted by Bob Baldwin at the airport. Steak dinner and cocktails were the fare, along with hours of catching up on 40 years worth of old times!
Early morning breakfast on saturday and had a tour of the old H.S.C. campus complex. We were all surprised to see the quadrangle missing, but were pleased that the University of Nebraska , the Nebraska State Patrol, and the Scottsbluff Veterans all put the remaining facilities to good use. From there, we "cruised Broadway". We drove by two of our old frat. houses on Ave. A & B. Also, we discovered that our favorite "watering hole" (Buddy Bar) is now a day care center. Wow, what a change! We also drove by the old Vic's Pizza, Der Stein, and where Truck Town was, but were surprised to see that Scotty's (home of the Bluff Burger) and the Midwest Theater were still in business. We then drove out to Scottsbluff National Monument . Many memories were shared. We all remembered just how beautiful and how much history there is there. We then returned to the Days Inn to "freshen up" for a night out on the town. We had a fine dinner at Whiskey Creek, and later socialized at The Pond in Terrytown, where we ran into fellow Scotty Gary Null.
Bob & Jane Baldwin hosted an afternoon cook out at their home in Minatare on Sunday. We followed with a short meeting where we remembered our departed brothers, and talked about our next reunion in two years (site unknown). We also initiated "pledge" Chris Zawol, who was given a project to complete. Upon approval by the brothers, he then was given a reunion tee shirt, and welcomed in as an "honorary brother". Socializing and remembering school and fraternity experiences followed.

Front (L-R) Chris Zawol, Steve Zawol (seated), Paul Schwartz Middle (L-R) Dan Weiss, Jeff Pritchard, Paul Sandilla, Kevin O'Donnell Back (L-R) David Peeler, Jim Hardy, Bob Baldwin, Rick Dorland, Chuck Rankin
Attending the reunion were: Bob & Jane Baldwin & Family, Rick & Charlotte Dorland, Jim Hardy, Kevin O'Donnell, David Peeler, Jeff & Pam Pritchard, Chuck Rankin, Paul Sandilla, Paul Schwartz, Dan Weiss, and Steve & Chris Zawol. Also, joining us was fellow Greek Winston Churchill (T.K.E.) who was "adopted" as an A.T. bro for the weekend. Joining the cook out on Sunday were fellow Scotties: Bob & Barb Goldman, Mark Masterton and Gary Null. A special thanks to the Bob Baldwin Family for opening up their home to host the festivities.
9/7/2008 STEVE ZAWOL: Your friends are important. I am retired and disabled and life being disabled was depressing until our Alpha Tau reunion last week. I am so happy I could be a part of what we still have....brotherhood. I look forward to being at our next reunion in 2 yrs. I also look forward to seeing my brothers that didnt attend this last one. Peace

3/19/07: LEE SNYDERMAN: Hey Mark, How’s politics in Nebraska treating you? Pretty unbelievable from the good old days in the alley behind 2020 Ave D; but we did have some good times! By the way, are you a Republican or Democrat? I saw your picture on the Scottsbluff Web site- You look exactly the same as you did in the 60’s- just like I do. Right! Could you add this new link to my registration? http://www.myspace.com/leesnyderman

7/11/06:
HSC BASEBALL: I am a researcher of college baseball history. Hiram Scott was in existence for such a short time, but had an intercollegiate baseball team in 1968 (at least). I'd like to know what other seasons HSC had a baseball team, who the coaches were, and other information. Do you know of a source of Hiram Scott student yearbooks where I might be able to obtain photocopies of the baseball pages for my records? Thank you so much. Rick Benner,
Collegiate Baseball Committee
Society for American Baseball Research,
3426 Highland Pine Way,
Duluth, Georgia 30096.
7/7/06: KEN NICKELS, PhD: Appointed Assistant University Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at the University of Nebraska, Kearney, Nebrask. Ken was a (I think) 1969 graduate of HSC. Retired in 2008.

STEVE TERANDO: Hi Mark, I Received the CD today. Thank you, especially for the autographed version, it is really neat. I have retired but have plans to go back and work "part time." If we do get out there I will definately call you. Once again, thank you for all you do for keeping the communications alive within the "Hiram Scott Family." Steve Terando
7/19-20/2002: The Hiram Scott College Reunion: We had about 75 attendees including Dr. Marinaccio and his wife, Dr. Maxene Marinaccio. Dick Beechner, football coach. Board of Director members Duane Kizzier, Cal Lenhart and Jim Massey. The Dean of Women Marjorie Robbins, and instructors, Dr. Howard Backous and Nancy Holland. Recruiter and later Dean of Men, Ron Niece and many students and a few benefactors and friends of HSC. The golf tournament was won by Ron Niece. There were tours of the old HSC campus hosted by the new owners, The University of Nebraska. On Friday evening we had cocktails and banquet at the Elks Lodge in Scottsbluff. Dr. Marinaccio’s daughter, Karen Bacon, from Lincoln, NE was there for the BBQ festivities on Saturday afternoon and produced a birthday cake for her father’s 90th birthday. The man remains an inspiration to this date and it is obvious why Scottsbluff followed him in the creation of HSC.

For nearly 30 years the question has been asked about who actually started the school and what was the cause of its demise. In celebration of this reunion, Dr. Marinaccio wrote a book about the beginning and the end of Hiram Scott College. Simply named “The Hiram Scott College Story” is available on CD. Go to the "Buy the Book" tab. Send a check and I'll send the cd. Proceeds from the book, as well as private donations will be used to fund this website.
We had some “Iron City” beer imported from Pennsylvania at the BBQ, and good music from the 60’s and 70’s. Lots of wonderful conversation and great BBQ ribs. The party only lasted from 2:00PM until 10:30PM when all those over 50 years old decided to retire for the evening. At the Sunday morning breakfast and we all promised to keep in touch.
